Directional Drill Operator (Vermeer)


FULL TIME Scarborough, Port Perry, Aurora, ON, Canada

Working under the supervision of the Directional Drill Coordinator, he/she will be part of a two person crew that installs cable and / or duct using a Vermeer Directional Bore machine. This individual will act as the drill head locator and assist with the steering of the drill rods. He / she may also drive the main or secondary support vehicle(s) used to transport this equipment to various project sites.


• Assist with the loading and unloading of the directional bore equipment in a manner that is secure and damage free
• May transport associated tools, materials and/or equipment in a safe manner
• May be required to complete the Driver’s logbook & daily vehicle inspection (pre-trip, en-route, post-trip), maintenance and repair reports, accident or incident reports
• May assist with the completion of a daily inspection on bore equipment prior to commencing work
• May prepare or assist with the preparation of the drill fluid based on site conditions prior to boring commencing
• Occasionally, may be called upon to operate the directional drill using the selected bore heads and back reamers to place cables and / or duct
• Trouble shoot any locate equipment issues and relay to the directional drill coordinator for technical assistance or resolution


• Completion of high school
• Minimum 2 years of experience driving similar type vehicle as the support vehicle
• Previous experience working around existing buried utilities
• Ideally previous experience in the operation of a Vermeer directional bore machine (or similar equipment) and the F5 Falcon locate equipment
• Good communication skills with the ability to work in a team environment
• Must be able to lift 23 kg (50 lbs)
• Valid driver’s licence (ideally a Class A with R or Z endorsement so this position can drive main support vehicle when required. )
• Must provide a clean driving record (abstract) and criminal check prior to employment commencing
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
