Salary: Starting at $19.82/hour, commensurate with experience.

Consider a job within the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services Maintenance and Stormwater Management Division. The Stormwater Management Division is responsible for the county’s stormwater and designated transportation infrastructure and provides support for emergency response during flooding and snowstorms. We are looking for individuals to fill our temporary/seasonal Maintenance Worker positions. Training and guidance are provided by knowledgeable experienced staff.
Under the general supervision of the Senior Maintenance Supervisor or team lead, the Maintenance Worker performs a variety of semi-skilled duties required in the operations of stormwater management. Performs concrete, asphalt and basic storm sewer construction and maintenance work. Operates a variety of small engine equipment and engages in manual labor. Maintains compliance with the approved performance standards for this position. Engages in safe working practices and complies with Stormwater Management and DPWES safety programs and guidelines. Stormwater Management positions are responsible for providing uninterrupted sewer service to residents during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies. This position is designated as emergency service personnel by the DPWES Director and/or the Division Director. As such, this position is subject to 24-hour on-call and may be required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties. You must make every reasonable effort to be accessible for communication. During unscheduled leave or administrative leave declarations by the County Executive, emergency service personnel are required to report for work.
Minimum Employment Standards: Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade.
Preferred Qualifications: Two years’ stormwater and snow removal experience.
Licenses and Certifications Required: A valid Virginia driver’s license. This position requires a valid motor vehicle license and is subject to a driving record check as a condition of employment and periodically thereafter, as determined by Risk Management.
Special Requirements: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check, to the satisfaction of the employer.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift/ slide up to 90 lbs. with assistance.
Candidate must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders further requiring use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Replacement of manhole covers weighing up to 90 lbs.
Effectively communicate both oral and in writing.
Must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment and use other automated technology to input, access and retrieve information from a laptop or desktop. Visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitors such as GIS maps.
Must be able to physically negotiate rough terrain on uneven ground such as hills, wooded and marshy areas.
Must be capable of pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, and climbing to enter permitted confined spaces such as in and out of catch basins and manholes. Per safety requirements, confined spaces may not be entered by people who weigh 310lbs. or more.
Must be physically fit to perform manual labor in all types of environments. This requires the ability to endure variable and extreme weather conditions such as hot, cold, during rain, noisy environments, etc.
Requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, reach, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crawl, lift, as well as work in strenuous and uncomfortable positions for long periods of time to manipulate materials with manual dexterity, use of hoses, and operate units up to 12 feet tall to set up and perform maintenance.
The ability to wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), such as a hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt and personal fall arrest harness
Note: * This position will work 32 – 40 hours per week, between the months of October – April. During emergency activations, this position will work weather related shifts dictating 12–16-hour shifts. This position may not exceed 900 hours per calendar year. Individuals in these positions are not eligible for county benefits.
