The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) invites applications for the position of Locksmith. A Locksmith performs skilled journey-level locksmith work in the installation, adjustment, maintenance, repair, and replacement of all types of locks and integrated security systems, access control devices and other types of lock hardware and associated software such as card readers, latches, door checks, and panic bars, including the changing of lock combinations and making of keys.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Hourly Salary: $48.68 (plus extensive benefits)
Health Benefits: District-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance plans for employee and dependents. A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided free of charge for each employee. A Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) with $1,500 contributed by LACCD annually.
Paid Time Off: 12 full-pay days and 88 half-pay days of illness leave per year, at least 16 paid holidays per year, and accrued vacation time from 10-24 days per year depending on the position. Other paid time off options are also available.
Retirement: Employees become members of the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) pension. Employees are also covered by Social Security.

TYPICAL DUTIES
Installs all types of locks and integrated security systems, access control devices and lock hardware, including panic bars, and performs the carpentry necessary for such installation.
Installs and maintains electrical access and exit control systems.
Adjusts, maintains, repairs, and replaces door locks, padlocks, tumbler locks, combination locks, card readers, and various other lock hardware such as panic bars, door checks, latches, catches, fasteners, and door closures.
Designs master key systems which include sub-master and single keys.
Maintains key system and other security-related records.
Redesigns lock cylinders to use multiple different keys.
Operates key-cutting machines.
Changes locker combinations and enters numbers of lockers and combinations in an official register.
Changes lock combinations using code systems and code machines.
Repairs safes and safe-locking systems.
Works with college staff in devising systems to prevent break-ins and pilferage.
Opens or removes locks which cannot be opened by ordinary means.
Instructs college staff in the operation of key-cutting machines and code machines.
Safely operates hand and power tools and equipment used in the locksmithing trade.
Maintains locksmith hand and power tools and equipment to ensure their safe and efficient operation.
Maintains shop area, supplies, and tools in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
May use a lathe, drill press, and other power tools in forming parts for locks, lock hardware, and/or safes.
May assist in preparing routine reports, material lists, estimating job costs, preparing job records, and making surveys of locksmith needs.
May provide work direction to staff assigned to perform locksmith work.
Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience:
A. Graduation from high school or its equivalent AND completion of an apprenticeship program of at least four years’ duration in the locksmithing trade AND one year of recent, full-time, paid, journey-level experience in the locksmithing trade.
OR
B. Graduation from high school or its equivalent AND five years of recent, full-time, paid experience in the locksmithing trade under the supervision of a journeyman or crafts supervisor. One year of the required experience must have been at the journey-level.
Special:
A valid Class “C” California driver's license may be required for some positions.
Travel to locations throughout the District may be required for some positions.
Physical Requirement:
Ability to lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
SPECIAL NOTE:
Some positions may involve working with asbestos and/or lead and will require an incumbent to participate in an asbestos and/or lead medical screening examination in compliance with the California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Sections 1529 and 1532.1.

SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process may consist of one or more exam parts which may include a training and experience evaluation, written test, performance test and/or oral interview.
Selection and promotion are based on a competitive examination process. Candidates who pass all exam parts are placed on an eligibility (hiring) list based on their overall exam score. In accordance with legal requirements, hiring departments may make job offers to candidates in the top three ranks of the eligibility list.
