LOCATION OF POSITION
This position is with the Maryland Department of General Services, Facilities Operations and Maintenance Division, located at 301 W. Preston Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.
MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB The main purpose of this position is to perform electrical work to include preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, repair, installation, rebuilding and upgrading of equipment, buildings and facilities for the Baltimore complex. This position will serve as the on-site expert and will advise management regarding all electrical matters.
This is an emergency essential classification subject to emergency release procedures. Employees in this classification must be willing and available for duty at such hours, day or night, and are required to remain or report for duty at such hours as needed to maintain the continuous operation of this agency.
If you are the selected candidate you will be required to complete a Pre-Employment Physical, which will assess your ability to safely perform the essential functions of the position. POSITION DUTIES Duties for this position include, but are not limited to:
Install new or modified electrical equipment and fixtures- Plans new or modified electrical installations by preparing sketches, diagrams or specifications according to blueprints and electrical codes. Assembles, installs, tests, and maintains electrical or electronic wiring, equipment appliances, apparatus, and fixtures. Connects wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components. Installs ground leads and connects power cables to equipment, such as motors. Fastens small metal or plastic boxes to walls to house electrical switches or outlets. Places conduit (pipes or tubing) inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas, and pulls insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits between boxes.
Service and repair electrical devices and equipment- Performs routine preventive maintenance on electrical systems, equipment, and machinery, such as inspecting controls, switches, meters, fuses, wires, motors, generators, and transformers by tightening screws, wires, and contacts. Tests electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes to ensure compatibility and safety of system. Diagnoses malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem. Inspects electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes. Constructs and fabricates parts, using hand tools and specifications. Repairs or replaces wiring, equipment, and fixtures.
Manage Electrical Shop - Examines work orders and estimates time, materials, and staff required to complete a project. Provides preliminary sketches and cost estimates for materials and services. Completes work orders, maintenance and repair logs and other reports in order to track and document work performed and to record materials and supplies used. Takes inventory of electrical materials, supplies, parts and tools. Assigns work and provides guidance and direction to lower-level electricians and other semi-skilled workers or helpers to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures.
Make recommendations and advise management- Makes recommendations to building tenants and management on technical and complex electrical problems. Advises management on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous. Participates in electrical installation inspections with management or engineers as the agency’s on-site expert. Reviews blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics to determine the location of wiring, electrical devices, and equipment to ensure compliance with code and safety regulations.
+Education+: Completion of the eighth grade.
+Experience:+ Five years of experience installing, repairing, testing and maintaining electrical systems, equipment, fixtures and control devices at commercial or residential buildings or other facilities.
Candidates may substitute additional experience as described on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
Candidates may substitute graduation from an accredited vocational or technical high school or other vocational or technical school with a concentration in electricity for three years of the required experience.
Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military experience as a non-commissioned officer in construction electrician classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in the installation and repair of electrical systems, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24-hours a day and may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
Employees in this classification who are designated as Level I or Level II employees shall attend and successfully complete the appropriate asbestos safety and health training as required by Executive Order 01.01.1987.22.
This position is designated as a sensitive classification. Testing for illegal use of drugs is required and shall be conducted during the selection process.
