The Department of Public Works and Environmental Services is looking for a Tree Care Specialist II to support in the Urban & Community Forestry Division.
The Tree Care Specialist II will support and assist in planning and executing tree planting projects, ensuring proper species selection and placement for optimal growth. Key tasks include digging appropriate holes, planting trees at the correct depth, mulching, and establishing a consistent watering schedule to ensure young trees receive adequate moisture. The specialist will conduct basic maintenance tasks such as watering, soil preparation, and mulching while monitoring the health of young trees and addressing issues like pests, diseases, or nutrient deficiencies.
Responsibilities also include pruning and removing diseased, dead, or undesirable trees and limbs, and operating forestry-related equipment like chainsaws, pole saws, and augers. Ensuring all activities adhere to safety protocols and maintaining safe working conditions is crucial. The specialist will provide training on best practices for tree care, support community engagement activities, and handle logistics such as loading and unloading trees and materials and driving vehicles to job sites.

Minimum Employment Standards:
High School Diploma or GED (Required)
4+years of experience in tree care services or related fields (Required)
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in tree planting or landscaping, knowledge of tree species and planting techniques, the ability to operate and maintain equipment safely.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
Valid Driver's License (Required)
Special Requirements: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record to the satisfaction of the employer.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to be physically active for three hours at a time.
Ability to bend, stoop, crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
Ability to lift/slide up to 90 lbs. with assistance.
Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
Ability to use all hand and power tools specific to tree work.
Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, wrist and shoulder movements.
Note:
* This position may not exceed 900 hours per calendar year. Individuals in these positions are not eligible for County benefits.
