Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for overseeing the installation and maintenance of all automatic and manual landscape irrigation systems on City owned property, including parks, ball diamonds, and soccer fields. Exercises direct supervision over assigned staff.

Work Hours

• 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.; Monday - Friday. Shifts are subject to change to accommodate seasonal adjustments, evening coverage, weekends, and holiday shiftwork, as dictated by business needs.

Essential Job Functions

• Plans, organizes, and oversees landscape irrigation systems.
• Designs, installs, maintains, and inspects irrigation systems for improvements and repair needs.
• Distributes and ensures completion of work orders; oversees the efficiency and productivity of finished products.
• Tests and prepares reports of back-flow devices.
• Gives estimates for new projects and orders materials.
• Takes inventory of all equipment assigned to the shop, occasionally lifting and carrying equipment weighing 20-50 pounds.
• Meets and acts as liaison with outside contractors; inspects new projects.
• Meets and develops projects through water agencies (i.e., SAWS, Bexar Metro).
• Supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned staff.
• Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
• Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in irrigation design, construction, and inspection, PLUS one (1) year of supervisory or lead responsibility.
• Back-Flow Preventer Assembly Tester Certification.
• Certified as a Licensed Irrigator (CIT).

• Ability to speak and write English.
• Familiar with work order systems, such as SAP.
• Experience using a computer and Microsoft Office programs.
• Understanding of SAWS water management procedures to create water variances and perform water checkups.
• Knowledge of irrigation controllers to manage water usage.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of landscape irrigation systems and products to include design maintenance.
• Knowledge of installation, repair, and maintenance of programmers, timers, and controllers.
• Knowledge of backflow, back pressure, back siphonage principles.
• Ability to supervise landscape irrigation systems crew members.
• Ability to check water meters and prepare reports on services required.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
• Ability to prepare cost estimates.
• Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
• Working conditions are inside and outside with exposure to temperature variations, damp/wet surfaces, hazardous materials, dust, and unfavorable fumes and vapors.
