NCS is seeking motivated individuals to join our Technology Services unit. This entry level position will participate as an integral member of this unit. Under supervision, assists with basic PC/telecommunications support to customers, including the installation and configuration of hardware and software; accurately documenting symptoms and problems and relaying this information to the support team. Provides basic problem resolution over the phone, remote desktop, in-person support; and performing related work as required. Advises, trains, and assists users on how best to utilize systems. Creates and manages databases, procedures, and documentation, including equipment inventory of utilized and spare equipment. Helps meet the demands of a fast-paced technology environment and be a part of an organization that makes a daily difference in Fairfax County communities.
Illustrative Duties
Troubleshoots problems related to PC's and system hardware and software and reports findings to help desk and coordinates problem resolution with vendors as needed;
Monitors network components for inventory purposes;
Assists in installing, configuring, upgrading, moving, and administering PC, network/telecommunications systems and components;
Loads and test computer software;
Creates/updates icons;
Relocates dumb terminals, printers, and reconnecting cables;
Performs password and other various levels of security support on all network systems;
Checks for computer viruses using appropriate software;
Provides help desk and inventory control support;
Collects data on system events and performance for reports and analysis.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Some knowledge of communications protocol and standards;
Some knowledge of personal computers and personal computer software application packages and development products;
Some knowledge of personal computer and network/telecommunications architecture and equipment;
Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly and effectively both orally and in writing;
Ability to provide one-on-one training and support to computer users;
Ability to perform personal computer, network/telecommunications system troubleshooting, both on software and hardware problems;
Ability to implement or coordinate equipment repairs and solve software problems;
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals used in the assembly, installation, repair, and operation of personal computers and data communications equipment;
Ability to maintain records and write reports.
Any combination education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from high school; plus either one year of specialized experience or two years of general experience in the installation and troubleshooting of personal computers, network/telecommunications systems; or possession of an associate’s degree in computer science or related field.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry check, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with supporting computers in a Public Access environment.
Experience using remote desktop support tools to resolve computer issues.
Experience with computer imaging systems to configure computers on the enterprise networks.
Experience performing end-user desktop support in a multi-site environment.
Experience documenting work and processing help desk tickets.
Experience supporting end users in a Microsoft Windows environment, including support of MS Office applications, troubleshooting, and resolving a variety of desktop, server, and remote access problems.
Experience using analytical skills and automated utilities to perform diagnosis and problem resolution.
Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to write technical documentation.
Ability to manage multiple priorities, tasks, and completing deadlines under pressure.
Ability to operate in a team environment with shared responsibilities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally sedentary in nature; however, incumbent may be required to do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items up to 25 pounds. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment. Sufficiently mobile to attend meetings at various locations and make presentations to county staff and community. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
