Under the general supervision of the Branch Chief provides management of projects and contractors applying ecological restoration and landscape architectural proficiency to stream restoration, natural landscaping, reforestation, storm drainage, flood control, and other water quality projects. Works closely with Landscape Architects, restoration ecologists, engineers, project managers and other stakeholders to support the Stormwater vegetative program. Will be directly involved in landscape architecture, terrestrial ecology (particularly in inventory), restoration ecology, vegetative community classification, restoration plan development, site layout and inspection, monitoring, and maintenance to ensure vegetative success. May also provide expertise in aquatic ecology and restoration of aquatic ecosystems.
Other specific duties include site inspections and monitoring, management of the invasive species assessment and control program, plan review and interpretation, negotiation of scopes of work for purchase order and task order contracted support, managing volunteers and contractors, to include Operation Stream Shield participants, in conducting resource management activities, cost estimation, preparation of specifications and special provisions, securing county approvals and site permissions needed for construction and maintenance activities, coordination and resolution of citizen concerns, as well as preparing and conducting public meetings.
Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in landscape architecture, biological services, restoration ecology, engineering, or related field.
Physical Requirements: Ability to conduct field inspections. Ability to walk in rugged, uneven, and steep terrain in streams and stream valleys unassisted to perform field investigation on storm drainage, stormwater management and stream channel projects. Ability to drive a motor vehicle. Ability to communicate effectively with the public verbally and in writing. Physically and mentally able to use all applicable personal protective equipment in an outdoor environment, including hardhat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, and sleeved shirt. Ability and willingness to work in adverse weather conditions responding to emergency events (e.g. snow removal, flood and hurricane response, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of and ability to identify common native and nonnative invasive plants of Fairfax County. Knowledge of non-native, invasive plant control methods. Experience working on ecological restoration projects.
Special Requirements:
*Note: This position may not exceed 1,560 hours per year. The term may be extended depending on workload, performance, and availability of funds. Individuals in these positions are eligible for limited employee benefits, including medical, vision and dental insurance coverage, and participation in flexible spending programs, but are not eligible to earn leave or receive holiday pay. The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer.
