The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is seeking a Vehicle and Equipment Technician II to join one of the most highly regarded park systems in the country. This position supports the equipment and facilities at Frying Pan Farm Park. Serves an active farm park environment and is responsible for maintaining and repairing a diverse fleet of farm, grounds, lawn, and heavy equipment. Performs routine maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs while also responding to emergency equipment issues as needed. Responsibilities include tire service and replacement on a variety of vehicles and equipment, preventative maintenance scheduling, seasonal servicing, and implementing winter maintenance programs to keep equipment safe, reliable, and operational year-round. Maintains organized parts and service inventories, orders and tracks replacement parts and supplies, enters and monitors work orders, and follows up on open repairs to ensure timely completion and minimal downtime. In addition to shop responsibilities, operates farm machinery and equipment in support of daily operations and assist with general site maintenance, farming activities, facility upkeep, and occasional animal care duties as needed. Works closely with farm and maintenance staff and requires flexibility, teamwork, initiative, and the ability to work independently in a dynamic outdoor environment. Also serves as an equipment trainer on site.
This is a full-time 40-hour-per-week position. Overtime may be required as needed, including occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency response situations. This position is designated as Emergency Service Personnel. Site address is 2709 West Ox Road, Herndon VA 20171
Illustrative Duties

Repairs, services, inspects, removes, disassembles, rebuilds, adjusts, reinstalls, and aligns components such as: engines, transmissions, after-treatment exhaust systems, brakes, clutches, radiators, electrical/electric components, HVAC components, hydraulic system components, pumps, bearings, steering, suspension, axles, differentials, and sub systems for automobiles, trucks, trailers, motorcycles, off-road equipment, pumps, generators, and other mechanical equipment;
Performs general preventative maintenance care to vehicles and equipment including changing oil filters, lubricating chassis, replacing belts, hoses, tires, and other for diesel, internal combustion, and hybrid engines;
Performs general preventative maintenance on electric engine vehicles to include software updates, brakes, and tires;
Coordinates and makes emergency repairs on vehicles, equipment (includes off-road engineering equipment) off site and roadside;
Attends training and educational programs for fleet technicians;
Reviews documents such as safety regulations and policies, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals;
Maintains awareness of new trends and technologies in the field of automotive repair;
Maintains the facility by cleaning vehicles and equipment, neatly storing tools and parts, properly discarding old/unused parts, sweeping areas, and collecting and emptying trash as needed;
Follows all environmental regulations, and disposes of chemicals, trash, etc. in designated areas;
Recycles when required;
May Serve as a lead worker over lower-level technicians.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Proficiency in the diagnosis, adjustment and repair of all assigned vehicles and equipment systems;
Extensive knowledge of methods and tools commonly used by service technicians in the repair and maintenance of automotive and industrial equipment;
Extensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates;
Ability to coach, counsel, train and evaluate employee performance to include safety policies, procedures and practices;
Ability to maintain good working relationships with co-workers and other County employees;
Ability to learn job related technical information, and to communicate such information to co-workers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for “Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to”) completion of the tenth grade plus four years of experience in problem diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of light, medium, heavy and/or specialized automotive equipment. Related automotive technical education or trade training above high school may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a set of tools commonly used in the automotive industry, such as wrenches, pliers, and sockets and ratchets. Personal tools are required upon appointment.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, and driver's record to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Have experience working on agricultural, diesel, small engine, hydraulic, or heavy equipment systems
Have experience with farm equipment and farming operations
Have experience with hauling equipment on trailers
Be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
Enjoy hands-on problem solving in a fast-paced environment
Take pride in preventative maintenance, organization, and safe operations
Be adaptable and willing to assist with a variety of farm and park operations as needed
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Driver's license (required)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift and handle materials with manual dexterity. Ability to use hand tools. Ability to lift up to 50lb. Ability to traverse all types of terrain in various weather conditions. Ability to work in environments with exposure to dust and noxious fumes. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
