Junior Mason

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Mason is responsible for assisting the Senior Mason in performing all types of interior and exterior maintenance of stone, flagstone, brick, concrete and stucco in the period rooms, galleries, offices, residences, and outbuildings. They ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies, promotes safety and environmental practices in the workplace. They will assist in laying, aligning, and joining brick and block, and working with stone and concrete.

Compensation: $23 - $24/hour

Work Schedule: In general, 35 hours per week M-F 7am - 2:30pm

Responsibilities:

1. Prepare worksites, set up and take down scaffolding, assist with the set up and tear down of concrete forms, mix cement, plaster, and other related materials. Assist Senior Mason in performing stone and brick repair (set or re-point) catch basin repair or replacement, stucco work, building of forms for steps and sidewalks, flagstone repair or replace. Work will take place in the museum period rooms, galleries, non-collections and public area, offices and other staff areas, residences, and other outbuildings.
2. Operates motorized vehicles and heavy equipment which include backhoes and front-end loaders, trucks, trailers, etc.
3. Assist staff from other trade shops when needed which include carpenters, painters, and auto mechanics.
4. Work collaboratively with the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) staff on various projects.
5. Assist with Point-to Point set up/breakdown and other Winterthur event.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent with two years as a Masonry apprentice or helper.

Preferred Experience: 3-5 years as a Mason

Knowledge/Skills:

1. Ability to communicate and collaborate with team members effectively.
2. A working knowledge of proper techniques for the masonry trade.
3. Ability read and understand shop drawings.
4. Knowledge of principals, procedures, terminology, and tools used in the carpentry, automotive, masonry and painting trades along with the understanding of methods and procedures used in building construction, repair and remodeling.
5. Communicate, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.
6. Flexible and team oriented.
7. Knowledge of PPE and safety practices in the workplace

Essential Functions:

1. Valid driver’s license with ability to complete Defensive driving course.
2. Able to walk or stand for extended periods of time; potentially 8 hours or more.
3. Able to lift 60+ pounds.
4. Able to climb ladders, scaffolding, and work in mechanical lifts.
5. Able to work in harsh environments and adverse weather conditions.
6. Ability and dexterity to safely utilize power hand tools and large woodshop equipment.
7. Exposure to paints, lubricants, dust, dirt.
8. Will be working around harmful substances, with frequent exposure to load noises. Must use appropriate PPE
